Dr. BERN KLEIN
Dr. Bern Klein is a professor of the Department of Mining Engineering at the Norman B. Keevil Institute in affiliation with the same department of the University of British Columbia (UBC). His main fields of research for long time have been the production of minerals and the technologies of chemical processing. After receiving his academic degree in Sciences and his Ph.D. in Mining Engineering from the UBC, Dr. Klein worked for eight years as a metallurgist before Rick Lawrence, director of the department that was before the Mining Engineering and Mineral Processing of the UBC, invited him to fully get involved into the faculty. Dr. Bern accepted the invitation, aimed at expanding his previous experience as a consultant and to actively contribute to the future of the department and the industry.
Certainly, he has succeeded in fulfilling his objectives. Dr. Klein has published numerous scientific articles in the areas of industrial minerals, ultrafine grinding, rollers for high pressure mills, hydraulic transport of non-Newtonian mineral slurries, leaching of metals from waste rock, rheology of mineral suspensions and improvement of technologies for artisanal and small-scale gold mining. He has also been director of the Center for Industrial Minerals Innovations (CIMI) of the UBC, supervisor in the laboratory of the Center for the Processing of Minerals and Coal (CMP), as well as an institutional contact between the UBC and the mining industry.
