INTRODUCTION

Opening a successful new mine is a vastly complex undertaking entailing several years and millions to billions of dollars. In today’s world, when environmental and labor policies, regulatory compliance, and impact on the community must be factored in, you cannot afford to make a mistake.
So, the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration has created this road map for you. Written by two hands‐on, in‐the‐trenches mining project managers with decades of experience who bring some of the world’s most successful, profitable mines into operation on time, within budget, and ethically, Project Management for Mining gives you step by‐step instructions in every process you are likely to encounter.
Beginning with a discussion of mining ethics and governance, this clearly written handbook walks you through all the project management steps—defining the scope, performing prefeasibility and feasibility studies, gaining societal acceptance, minimizing the impact and risks, creating workable schedules and budgets, setting in place the project execution plan, assembling the human resources, hiring the contractors, and establishing project controls—and then on into the delivery of the engineering and design, construction, progress reviews, pre‐launch commissioning, and ramping up for operation. Each chapter includes several useful aids such as figures, checklists, and flowcharts to guide you through every step, from conception through successful opening. The course is based around the SME Project Management for Mining handbook that captures mining industry best practices from the experiences of a broad spectrum of companies (Owner, EPCM, OEM, and contractor) along with the wisdom of multiple senior experienced project managers.
The program is conducted by the handbook’s authors (Robin Hickson & Terry Owen) who utilize their combined 80 plus years of mining project and operations experience to enhance and enlighten throughout the course.

Project Management for Mining is a three-day practical course focused on the successful delivery of mine development projects. The course teaches project management best practices, and how they are woven together, from initial mineral resource identification through the project stages of opportunity, viability, planning, execution and completion, to delivery of a sustainable operating property.

PROGRAM OBJECTIVES

Throughout the program, the course participants will :

  • Understand and experience best practices for project delivery from across the full breadth of the minerals industry.
  • Practice project management road map that significantly increases the likelihood of successful project delivery.
  • Learn practical usable tools through finding valid solutions through the authors experiences and interactive discussions.
  • Utilize workshop setting to interact on real issues faced by actual mining project managers in the field.

Project Management for Mining “Best Practices” will take place at InterMet Center on June 02 – 04, 2023.

This three‐day practical course focuses on the successful delivery of mine development projects. Primary emphasis is on major greenfield mine development, but the information presented is equally applicable to brownfield project undertakings.

The course teaches project management best practices, and how they are woven together, from initial mineral resource identification through the project stages of opportunity, viability, planning, execution and completion, to delivery of a sustainable operating property. The course focuses on the key steps in each stage that must be properly executed to achieve project success.
Participants are assigned to work on real issues faced by actual project managers in the field. Interactive case study discussions leading to valid solutions and practical usable tools are fundamental elements of the course.
The course is supported throughout by the Project Management for Mining handbook (included with registration). From the time of its initial launch in 2015, this book, written by the two course directors, has become the #1 selling publication of SME. The book comprehensively details the best practices for project delivery from across the full breadth of the minerals industry. The knowledge and guidance provided by the book applies to mine owners from junior minerals organizations to large mining companies, as well as to engineers, constructors, technical advisors and consultants. The wisdom imparted both by the course authors and from within the handbook provides a project management road map that significantly increases the likelihood of successful project delivery for all course participants.
